First Contact Physiotherapy
What is this?
The First Contact Physiotherapy Service is offered as a preference to seeing the GP for patients suffering from Musculoskeletal conditions (muscle, joints and bones). First contact Physiotherapists are Advanced Practitioners with extensive expertise in the clinical assessment, diagnosis and management of MSK conditions.
Why is this helpful?
It is estimated that 10 – 25% of all GP consultations are for MSK related conditions, and that a First Contact Physiotherapist could see up to 50% of these patients, helping to reduce waiting times and provide more specialised advice.
How to Book
Patients can contact the surgery to book directly with the First Contact Physiotherapist, in most cases without having to consult a GP first (which means we can offer more appointments). Your initial appointment is likely to be via the telephone to assess the situation. The FCP will then book face-to-face appointments if required.
Who can be treated?
Patients over the age of 18 with:
- Back pain and/or sciatica
- Neck pain
- Hip/groin/knee/ankle/foot/toe pain
- Shoulder/elbow/wrist/hand pain
- Pain or swelling in multiple joints
- Widespread un-diagnosed aches and pains
- Sports injuries/strains/sprains
The First Contact Physiotherapy Service will also treat patients who are:
- Pregnant with MSK pain
- Suffering from post partum pain
